For my own reference, a collection of Endling's Ever After comments. Note, some of these are out of date and certain details have changed over the course of the years.
General
Journal/SNAFU
Things to remember when drawing/writing Goldi: She is sweet, polite, helpful, but makes quick assumptions about people due to her upbringing.
I just think the announcement art is cute, be more tsun Red.
Notes from Goldilocks
Goldilocks.. and of course her infamous unwanted company. Manifested in a bizarre phenomena which will be clearer when the comic becomes available.. until then I'll let you wonder what the hell giant static-y looking bears are doing floating around behind her.
RaeEsmerelda: Eek. Evil teddy bear. She looks prettier, or cuter, something like that, as opposed to the other Everafter characters. It's not a bad thing by any means. I dunno, maybe it's that she doesn't look nearly as haunted. Feh. Her depression shows in this, and you can see she might be unstable (through the pose and stuff like that). Side note...are you changing her design for the comic? I have to say I absolutely love this version instead of the original card design.
End: All of the portrait designs I've been posting up lately are the brand new shiny versions that will show up in the comic. The original card or asylum 'mugshot' designs were the first time they were ever created, in a vision very very much different than they are now. Hansel and Gretel, then Red herself are next. And yes, Goldilocks is supposed to look significantly more fetching than the others, as it plays a role in the story, as well as in the way her psychosis manifests itself in relation to her.
OKami-hu: Maybe it's the mini-Freud talking in me (shouldn't swallow too much of those critters...), but my version is that those ghost-bears are actually guardians, who protect her from _everything_... and I mean, really everything. Even a friendly pat on the shoulder. They were produced by Goldie's psyce after she recieved those scars. A foster family maybe...? Or, actually, the foster family on the loose. However, I'm sure there the real version is better. *shrug*
End: You are quite close in that estimation!
Sandcastle: Technical-wise, she seems to float a little due to the shadows. Is that intentional?
End: The floating bit was intentional, but didn't come out QUITE like it was supposed to. I was going for an effect but halfway through realized the initial drawing wasn't going to get it across. So I lowered her down a bit.. so at a quick glance she may look like she was seated, but in actuality she's not. Ties into her abilities in the story.
Notes from Path of Crumbs:
Here we have Hansel and Goldilocks (didn't recognize her..? Well that's how she's going to look in the comic. So get used to it!) traveling through the woods, based on a sequence about.. halfway through the story. They've lost their way since their escape and got caught up amongst a webbing of trees.. so Hansel, being the gentlemanly little deranged soldier he is, took the initiative and burned a path straight through. Goldilocks is apprehensive, but appreciates the gesture, though she does wonder what the odd smell coming from the smoldering woods could be. Surely not hundreds of small, formerly cute woodland creatures, no.
Gretel's his sister but she's not present at this point in the story. Goldi just ends up becoming Hansel's traveling companion.
random-crazyness: just wondering, if goldilocks was inseperable with her teddy, where is it? is it behind the flamethrowers tanks?
End: You guys really do want me to reveal everything about the story before it's out, don't you. Patience. Paaaaatience. I'm not answering any questions about the whereabouts of Goldilocks teddy bear. FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF. --Goldi hasn't appeared with her bear in the comic or later artwork, I assume it's been dropped.
Note from EA character mishmash
They have no set ages, really. More like age-ish areas. Heh. Hansel is a little boy, what, ten or twelvish.. Red is second youngest, in her mid-lower teens, Goldi's a tad older than Red, maybe by about a year or two, and Tom is the oldest.
Not a note but check out the tiny pictures on the wall on Booth Babes
Note from AT THE READY
Directly next to Rex there is the demure Goldilocks, accompanied by her three spectral 'companions'. Sweet as sugar, Goldi. But the girl has issues.
Notes from Enthusiasm
Goldi's reasons for excitement, on the other hand, are more 'I just found the book that I lost on top of my head' grade.
Red
Journals/SNAFU
CrowHatter: How would Red do riding a horse?
End: Riding.. a horse? I dunno I suppose she'd handle it like she handles anything else, focused and determined. Heh. She's got nothing against animals so she wouldn't tear it apart or anything.
There isn't much more to Red than being a heartless, rampaging force of destruction, at least when she's been ticked off. Otherwise she's very solitary and keeps her thoughts to herself. Her eyes are almost always wide open and glossed over when she fights, with her big arse saw weapon.. (which you can see in full detail in the Everafter poster on my front page, if you plan on using it). She's very single-minded and quite focused. But deep down she's still a little girl at heart. (From waaay back in the prologue days)
As for Everafter.. it's a story about Little Red and her escape from a maximum security asylum for the 'fantastically traumatized'. Along the way she's going to meet friends and dispose of foes, so don't get too attached to any of the characters you've seen in my gallery thus far until you know what category they fall into.. It's not going to be a chronicle about their life and times in an asylum, as that doesn't really make for great visual storytelling outside of dramatic monologues.. and more serious subject matter. The whole project is being done as an effort to see if I can even MAKE comics, or tell a story worth reading, before I go and decide to commit to the idea..
Red character survey
verallien: As for the animal love... is that love like love for animals as beings or animals as food?
End: Love and respect for animals as beings, haha. To be honest, in my mind, Red would probably be close to a vegetarian.
As for my favorite character.. it really depends. I like drawing Red, because to me it's always a challenge making her expression fit what I think is going on in her head. (And her weapon is a ton of fun.)
Things to remember when drawing/writing Red: She is serious, single-track minded and unshakeable in her will. She doesn't open up easily to others.
Ninjachick4: What happend to Red's kick ass normal huge saw blade of jaggadness? That was orginal cause it was JUST the tool saw, raw, rather than now. No razzel dazzel, no magical know-how behind it, no Gods or Godess behind the creation of it. Just a weapon weilded by a cranky pants girl with murder on the mind. Now you've made it into a sword. How come?
End: Heh heh. Her normal kick ass saw blade of jaggedness was kind of mundane, to me. I like stuff that looks more unique. Besides which.. there IS a story behind the saw itself, sorry to disappoint, heh, but it was always a part of the plot itself. It's not huge, but there's a part of the story that addresses it. And it's not really a sword either. The only thing that changed since the prologue is it's less jagged and there's a carving on the handle. But it's still in the works, really. Actually I meant to address that in a future post, haha, because people are going to be like 'It changed AGAIN!?' a few pages down, but yes, sure enough it does, so you'll all have to deal with it, till I can go back and make the necessary edits. All right, actually, I drew up an example. Now keep in mind here folks, I don't WANT something conventional or at all logical in terms of a weapon. I just want her to be able to look like she's wielding it convincingly.
1. An example of the handle in the middle I was talking about, so it would basically be held like a sword, only she would probably use both hands on various parts of the handles to manipulate the blade in a variety of ridiculous ways. Heh.
2. An example of what the sawblade will look like in about three more pages. (I told you Everafter was an experiment! Expect a lot of rough cut changes in the beginning folks! I'm hoping to have it all hashed out in the first chapter, it would just be inappropriate to keep switching things around afterwards. At least then if it ever goes to.. publishing or something, I could just alter the first chapter accordingly.) This is the same design as on the left, a handle in the middle.
3. Another design that mixed the saw and giant blade type of weaponry, with a re-design on the wolf hilt. Which, actually, as awesome as I think a wolf hilt would be, may just be too complicated looking to keep on.
4. The design I'm leaning more towards, a two-handed approach that CAN be wielded with one hand as well, but only in long swings with a lot of 'umph' behind them. Below this is an example of a swing, heh.
5. More experiments with counter weights and handles and such.
6. Some bizarre ass design where her hand is actually inside the hilt itself.
Again. I like the weapon to be a bit unwieldy and strange to the viewer. This way Red will clearly have some weaknesses in terms of her manuevering with the blade. A character isn't interesting without weaknesses, or their fighting style, as it were.
Geno: I would also think that the idea of the weapon being hard to wield is cool. It would sorta be a kind of symbolism as well. It is hard to use as a good weapon and no person in their right mind would want to use it, thinking it is inferior. However, Red (I imagine) would eventually learn to wield it to outfox people with more mundane, conventional weapons. That what we perceive to be bizarre and inadequate turns out to be something that has transcended the power and art of using weapons like standard swords and firearms. Much like Red, the saw is rough, strange, and unstable, but there is strength behind it that is buried beneath the surface. Or maybe that whole perception is just a coincidence. I just like it when the tools/weapons characters use reveal something about them.
End: :D Well put.
Mmuh. I do wish EA had gotten farther along though, because I know Red as a silent bloodbath on wheels isn't a horribly interesting prospect. Particularly since she hasn't really even spoken yet. I know what she's like two chapters down and I like that Red a good deal better than the one you see in the introduction. (Well I like that one too, but yeah. There's a lot more depth there that has yet to come.)
Note from page 13
DaSchwartz: Also, on a side note, I like Red better with her eyes wide open, as opposed to half-closed like Laharl. Just something I wanted to share!
End: Well yeah, that's her traditional look. Big and goggle eyed. But she's not always gonna look like that. She IS rather pissed in that given panel. Gotta give her some emotion, as she's gonna be carrying the whole story from here on in. Well. Until I introduce her cohort in the next chapter..
Notes on page 31
k-hallowseve: Methinks Red's shininess illustrates her regaining consciousness. The most interesting part, for me, is the fact that even in her dreams she's no match for the BBW. I mean, we'd like to think that we'd at least pretend to win in our own little fantasy world--but you know something's very wrong when you can't even face your demons in your dreams. Love the new page.
End: -taps his nose- Spot on. Although it's more of a violent segue into semi-conscious reality, as you'll see in a bit. The violence illustrated by the 'shards' of background.. and a rather powerful electric jolt.
Poor Red. Knowing the story, in my head anyway, I know it's necessary to show her at her most vulnerable, frightened and whatnot so as to demonstrate what she was before, the severity of what happened (though this sequence is not a very reliable recollection..) and what she has become now.. but I sure want to get back to the butt-kicking. I get uber protective of my characters as I embellish their stories, particularly ones leaning to the side of tragic circumstance. But I guess that's why you have to show them at the mercy of the villains. Cause if you can make your audience feel the way you do about your characters, you've done something right.
Notes from Little Red Riding Hood
Red's personality has changed a lot though. She is very much more aware of herself and her surroundings, as opposed to a boggle-eyed demon wielding a saw. (You can't make a very long story about a character that one-dimensional. Well. She does return to that 'mode' a number of times during the comic, but..) Don't worry. Their core character itself is the same. Red will still chop up many people. Hansel and Gretel will enjoy burning things to the ground and/or eating people. Etc.
Ehh somewhere in that pre-teen/teen area.. I never really define exact ages for my characters. She's a young girl. She's not a little kid. But she's not like 17+ or anything.
She is a shortie. Supposed to be like 4'11" or so. Somewhere in that area. Five feet maybe at best.
Note from Meine Bessere Haelfte
Red's cap being big, oversized and bulgy is quite intentional. That's how I like to make it. No, you aren't the only person to have pointed it out as a flaw, but nonetheless.. I like it! Ah well.
Note from Red Skies
InscrutableArt: I was wondering if I was seeing things, but... Red's cape does look like... a wolf? Am I correct? I see two ears, an eye and possibly his entire "grin".
End: It's odd, all the time that's passed since I submitted this, and I think you're the first person to see that.
Notes from OC Battle 1: Red Vs Hiroshi
Axysses: I thought it was wolves, not mice?
End: It can be more than that. :) The story hasn't progressed far enough to show.
Volative-silence: I'd like to see a match up of the sisters [Rosie and Posie] vs. Red.
End: Oh, it'll happen in the actual comic, don't worry. All in due time.
thenewlovelysilence: I love how in the 15th panel Red's has her pinky out. How lady-like. rofl
End: Haha, glad someone noticed that.
Note from AT THE READY
Red is seen her sporting a fashionable Big Bad hat and Dr. Crooked glasses. She seems to enjoy collecting trophies of people she either has killed or seeks to kill sometime in the future. You know, when her schedule opens up. Currently she's out to kill me for a lack of updates in the webcomic she stars in.
Notes from Mask of Red
Red's eyes in her earlier form were hazel. Her first 'portrait' with a white BG was also hazel. It wasn't until a little after this that I gave her green eyes. Why? Dunno. Just did. They will likely remain as such. :3 Sorry for the confusion. ;o Truth be told I actually like the hazel better? But it also draws her near to a lot of the other characters eye colors. Jack in particular, though his have seemed to become more and more sickly yellow every time I draw him.
Notes from 25 Expressions: Red
Got sick of seeing every drawing I'd done of Red being her angry pissy face. She's a lot more than that but it just takes a bit to get there, heh.
subdevper: Cider doesn't do that to you.
End: Clearly you've never had her Gran's cider. Psht.
neonribbon: Very nice work. Flirty and Confident don't really read well, but that's probably just me. Sarcastic is my favorite one!
End: Considering the nature of her character, they aren't really meant to. ESPECIALLY flirty. Haha. But that's the sort of thing people would need to see in the context of the actual story.
Note from Finale - 2
Rayanaminge: It's your angles on "the climber". I mean, I've got nothing against your choice in angles... but some of them lead me to believe that he will betray her. I study a lot of comic book art, and perception and angle can tell a lot more to the to the character than their actions and oral interactions. Maybe it's just me, but I don't have a good feeling about "the climber". Love the character design, but something about the angle leads me to think... he's gunna hurt or betray Red.
End: And maybe that means you're seeing him with an inkling of how Red would initially be viewing him. Hmmm~
Notes from Enthusiasm
Red CAN be the enthusiastic type, she just requires a stronger catalyst than most.. like, say, NOT being incarcerated in a labyrinthian asylum for dangerous fairytale maniacs.
Puss in Boots
Journal/SNAFU
When drawing/writing Mr. Boots: A professional, in every sense of the word, Mr. Boots does whatever Chairman Dumpty orders him to without question. His paycheck is his only concern (and hey, if he can crack skulls in the process, he's not the type of cat to complain.)
Ganondorfthethird: Can Mr. Boot's talk?
End: Yes, but he does so very rarely.
Mr. Boots has always been intended as a bodyguard for Chairman Dumpty. His position in the Everafter establishment, anyway. His job is to look tough, make orders to the lesser enforcers, and pretty much accompany Dumpty wherever he goes and follow orders. The original Puss n' Boots always struck me as an undyingly loyal servant, as such, I thought the next-to-wordless bodyguard type was a perfect role for him. There was a brief stint where I thought I'd make him a ninja, which the prologue was made during. Later changes to the storyline rendered that design a bit less effective though. Mr. Boots is not one for stealth. He's one for getting the job done, no-nonsense, no frills, just flat out bone breaking efficiency. Were he a on-the-fringe staff member meant to carry out dirty work, I think a shadowy look would be more appropriate. But.. the faculty have another type of creature for that. I think you may be seeing the suited look more in the future. Sorry to those folks who were pulling for the hat.. integrating it into the suit look makes him resemble a gangster or really formal pimp.. haha.. not that that's a bad thing, but it seems out of place..
Note from page 14
She's incredibly quick, able to evade an entire squad of soldiers, and yes, she is defeated by a cat who gets the drop on her.
So what does that tell you about the ability of the cat, and the sheer strength of the blow?
It shows you the hierarchy of power. ;o
Note from Connections
This piece features two of her characters, Rocky (the sly looking devil in the middle) and Freckle (the unstable, adorable, trigger happy one on the left) procuring a shipment of state-of-the-art weaponry from none other than President Dumpty's bodyguard and weapons specialist, Mr. Boots. (..from my series Everafter, if you didn't already know.) Yes. Mr. Boots. He looks nothing like he used to in the prologue. I'm sorry to the folks who enjoyed his giant feathery-hatted ninja incarnation. But this one just works better in the storyline.
Dr Crooked
Journals/SNAFU
When drawing/writing Dr. Crooked: Well-educated, in the malevolent sort of way. Imagine a man who enjoys every bit of his job, when his job involves drilling into people's mind and plucking things out to see when his subject will snap. Frightening, looming, and ever calm/collected.
Dr. Crooked is indeed the head doctor of the asylum, though he is more on the side of psychological science than medicine. He performs experiments, research and oversees most everything in the darkest depths of the establishment. Hence his fetching skin color and dashing good looks. There are throngs of nurses and doctors to watch over the regular asylum inmates, specialized ones for the next tier of more dangerous inmates, and Dr. Crooked at the top of the ladder, along with his own squad of goons, for dealing with the nastiest of the nasties admitted in. I bet you can guess which ones those are
Note from page 15
You will find out what role Dr. Crooked plays later on down the line. He isn't an entirely pleasant nor sane individual though..
Note on page 32
Those are Dr. Crooked's personal assistant squad, in case you were wondering. They are Boogiemen.
Note from The Doctor
And that right there is the reason Dr. Crooked wears little black goggles. His eyes are just hideous. As for the rest of him, well.. would you believe he's actually quite vain?
Ganondorfthethird: You have to love Dr. Crooked. I mean, just look at that picture. He seems like such a happy soul
End: Oh he is, he is! Just.. his perception of happiness is somewhat.. askew. Which just accentuates the rest of him, naturally.
Jack
Journals/SNAFU
I like writing for most with Jack, because his personality allows for the most freeform and casual speaking, as opposed to trying to think of exactly what a character would say here or there. (He doesn't care what he says and when, heh.)
When drawing/writing Jack: Arrogant, self-centered, egotistical.. yeah, you get the idea. Prides himself on his heroic status. His harp turned sword, Israfel, is a frilly girly girl.. concerned with the look of her nails, hair, etc. She adores Jack to no end.
Ganondorfthethird: Without revealing anything about his origin, could you please describe what Jack's personality is like? I kinda imagined him being somewhat of a sarcastic asshole, so would that assumption be accurate.
End: Your assumption is correct. Add pretentious, extremely arrogant, flirtatious as well.
Notes from Master of the Stalks
Who is this..? Well.. he's got a lot of names, but they're all the same. A legend in the fairy tale world.. or a self-proclaimed legend, anyway. He's slain giants left and right.. but has now found a more delectable prey, tucked away in the corridors of the asylum..
As for the sword.. yeah, that was one part of it I didn't go back to nearly as much as the rest of him. Although I don't want it to look too shiny and crisp because it's supposed to be a battered, old sword he's been using for a long time, in extensive battles. But it could definitely use some touching up. I think I got exhausted after trying to make those damn folds look all right. Haha.
!zakb0y: i cant help but feel that the swords handle is a bit too short. otherwise, his costume and stuff is awesome. is that girl growing out of the sword?
End: It's funny you should mention that, he actually explains why the handle is only the size of his hand in the story. He made the sword himself and with a very particular motive in mind. Well. Time will tell the story. I just gotta get the second chapter up soon.
And yes, that is indeed a girl growing out of the sword handle. She was a part of the singing harp before he 'altered' it..
The hen that laid the golden eggs you mean..? Well.. there are two feathers on the hilt of the sword.. Ahem..
rHyMe-rEaSoN: That harp there on the sword, definitely from Jack and the Beanstalks. -_-' Though, y'know, he looks pretty girlish t'me.
End: As I said, he was modeled after how Eric Kincaid designed his nursery rhyme boys and girls. The boys had just as foofy, curly hair as the girls, among other things. Somehow it fit him. Since he's a narcissistic jack ass who primps a lot.
bluealaris: hurrah! this is quite wonderful! i'm liking the wacom shaun. the only thing i'd say needs a weeny bit of work is the sword. the metal seems a bit rushed compared to the rest of the picture. or maybe jack's sword isn't supposed to be shiny sharp? mayhaps he's used it too much? ah well. it seems alex has already lectured you about this anyway. can't wait to see the rest!
End: Yaaah. Jack's sword is supposed to look incredibly over used. Like he's basically killed every giant or other mythical creature in the entire realm up until this point. Glad you like it though, outside of the sword.
Miss Muffet
Journals/SNAFU
When drawing/writing Muffet: Muffet is devoid of words and emotion, although she does move on occasion, though no one is sure if it's her or the spider doing it. The spider that lurks about her person is predatory, conniving, and always hungry.
Notes from Miss Muffet
iamstace: That huge spider wouldn't happen to be up for adoption, would she?
End: And maybe that spider isn't up for adoption, but there's about ten thousand more of them in the series that could use a good home.
TheWritingBee: Holy shit. That is a big spider. How does she go through those average house door ways with that thing on her??
End: She doesn't use doors. She goes through walls, furniture, cars, whatever happens to be blocking her path.
u63r: Wait, if I recall your descriptions correctly, that spider is permanently attached to her head, right?
End: Well. Sort of. It's kind of complicated. Haha. It 'takes up residence' with Miss Muffet. There's a variety of meanings to that. Hee hee. It shows in the comic anyway.. well.. the chapters I haven't released yet, haha.. gotta get to that, gotta gotta.
Holding him up? Haha. I leave that to cartoon physics. That's the kind of stuff I take mucho liberties with. Much like my other characters who wield eight foot long weapons and such. It makes for an interesting look, altogether, if this gigantic spider just crawls around on her willy nilly as if she was its own personal cobweb. Or at least, it will, when she shows up in the comic.. heh.
Note from Ashes, ashes
No she's from the nursery rhyme 'Little Miss Muffet'. Only in the rhyme she's not being possessed by a giant two hundred pound spider like my design is.
Hansel and Gretel
Journals/SNAFU
Things to remember when drawing/writing Hansel: He is completely silent. Behaves like a hardened soldier, follows orders with little to no hesitation. Rarely seen without his sister, Gretel.
When drawing/writing Gretel: She is wild, untamed in personality and action. It doesn't help that she is outstandingly cruel as well. An aggressive, domineering brat.
Notes from Hansel and Gretel
Hansel and Gretel! Dastardly duo that Little Red runs into early on in her journey through Everafter..
Naw Gretel is an overbearing wench of a brat, whereas Hansel is a softspoken (well actually he doesn't speak at all) shy lad (though no less dangerous than his sister), as such I wanted this to reflect in their height. Besides, in my version Hansel is younger than her.
jagcsb: this versions are nice, but your other versions the ones that are at the beggining of your gallery, are a bit better for my taste cause they inspire fear. but this ones are done super nice.
End: Just wait till you see them in the comic. I don't think they will have to try very hard to instill fear given what they're doing to some soldiers when Red finds them.
DaSchwartz: New Gretel looks quite a bit meaner than the last one. She looks like she takes advantage of Hansel quite a lot too.
End: You got it, spot on. Glad they convey that.
KriegsaffeNo9: I love the look on Hansel's face. That boy's seen things that he'll never forget.
End: Haha, you got it. And most of them perpetrated by his sister, bwahaha..
!shekki: dude, whats with gretels shoes? they look like little mouthy doodahs
End: Gretel's shoes are like wooden clogs on crack. I dunno. They's very random. And they'd hurt like hell if she caught you with a front kick. The front part could take your jaw off. Which is kind of intended.
uplaw: Hansel and Gretel is about canibalism, right? anyway, this is wicked awsome. you always make the coolest shoes! and the outfits are really neat =]
End: Cannibalism, abandonment issues, threatening adults/strangers, yeah, it's a mishmash.. I chose to represent the parts of the story that reflect cannibalism and, well, pyromania (burning the witch taken to a next step).. well, it'll be more obvious in the actual story.
Heh heh, no worries, Hansel's flamethrower is still included in his design. I was just lazy in this particular picture. And Gretel's thing isn't pyromania anymore so much as an obsession with food and a habit of.. well, boiling people in the process. Which is why her outfit has more candy elements. The candy hair things, the candy designs on her dress, the soft pinks in the color, etc. And Gretel isn't that big. She's as tall as Red or most the other girls in the story. Hansel is just really short. Most people see this picture and assume she's a giant.. if you saw her compared to the other characters it wouldn't seem such though.
Those are restraints on their wrists, yepper. The number 02 is significant. Hansel actually has an '03' but his arm is turned up so you can't see it. And Red has an 07. And yes, every character featured in the story are from the same place, since it all takes place within that place.
As for their personalities, Hansel got more of the pyro tendency from the story. Gretel retained more of the gluttonous aspects, going as far as suffering from the same problem the witch they encountered had regarding them.. Without getting too far into their personalities, Gretel is a pushy, overbearing, mean older sister who enjoys putting on a happy face for others in an attempt to look sweet. Hansel is an inward little boy with a bit of a 'whipped' syndrome in regards to his sister. Nonetheless they act as a unit. But.. they both give a 'warm' welcome to Red when she runs into them in the course of the story.. heh heh.
SigilofDreams: By the way, what exactly are those eye-shaped emblems on the chests of both children?
End: In liederhosen there is a center strap between the suspenders. That's what that is, with some added oddities latched on to it. Hence the eye effect. (The typical sort of bizarre contraptions added to them by the good people of the Everafter Asylum.. for what reason? Well you'll have to find out..)
BlackrRamm: are you gonna make the old witch too?
End: Naw, no old witches. They already broiled one, not many more want to approach them.
Gretel and Red are roughly the same age in terms of looks. They'll be in the same drawing style. I think once I submit the new portrait of Red people are gonna be a bit surprised. Everyone had to grow up a bit for the story. (Not by much though. Just kind of stretching their height to make them easier to work with for fight sequences.)
Gretel's his sister but she's not present at this point in the story. Goldi just ends up becoming Hansel's traveling companion.
Notes from Faces
Addicted2Kura: i think gretels's eye is twitching... please don't hit me...
End: Yes, her eye is twitching. Don't worry she doesn't hit. Just bites. Really hard.
Rosie and Posie
Journals/SNAFU
When drawing/writing Rosie and Posie: Rosie is playful, free-spirited and childish. Posie is her shadow, but offers nothing in terms of conversation. She will mirror Rosie's movements now and then.
Rosie and Posie were originated as a sort of 'mid boss' in the asylum portion of the story, but their roles grew steadily over time as I fleshed out their backgrounds and thought of how they could move things along. Turns out they became pretty crazy popular on DA. And I can't tell ya' what's wrong with them, that's the story's job.
Notes from Rosie and Posie
Twin sisters.. though they look quite young, they have been in the halls of Everafter longer than any of the other inmates.. It's highly recommended you don't try and hold their hand..
Doomfool: Are those feathers?
End: Naw, ashes. I wanted them to look kinda like shredded black cherry blossoms though. Heh.
nightash: Posie looks sorta sad... Is it 'cos she's missing an arm?
End: Well that's one of many reasons she's sad, yes. Heh.
They are both able to see, actually. But their eyes aren't quite normal anymore.. particularly Posie's, heh.
vengefulkiwi: My only thought would be that the bandages, unless magical or changed often, should be a little singed. At least around the hands
End: Heh, yeah, I thought someone might mention that. They won't get singed because it's a liberty I took with the character design. Given their backstory, bandages shouldn't even be able to come in contact with their hands at all.. But it just looks cooler. ;) In a fictional world where fairytale characters inhabit an asylum.. I'm not a stickler for logic in their designs either. Hahah.
androidgirl: Were they the ones who wiped out about a third of Europe?
End: Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe.
Glahardt: Say... How does Posie see?
End: I'm not sure.
SpydrXIII: are those hands burny? if so why no burny the gauze?
End: Because the hands aren't burny. Stop looking so hard. Damn. You're gonna miss all the fun that way. Best not to try and find logic in pictures of girls with giant, evil black extensions of limbs and empty eyes with white iris'.. it's a hopeless venture.
Ganondorfofthethird: Is Posie blind? It looks like one of her eyes is just an empty socket, but you can't really see the other eye that well.
End: One eye is an empty socket, the other is covered in a big square bandage, yes. So for all intents and purposes, she is 'blind'. But that doesn't stop her from causing just as much havoc as her twin sister. One of those sort of 'heightened senses' dealy type things. Well, when it's convenient anyway.
Ganondorfofthethird: Are their hands and arms always huge like that? Cause in the first sketch of Rosie, her hands don't really look large, but they do now. I just assumed taking off the bandages somehow "freed" them and they expanded in size, but I just want to be sure.
End: You've got the right idea. They look normal until they begin to unravel. Shhh.
Notes from Ashes, ashes
Yes they are, twins in fact.
Whether or not the rhyme has to do with the black plague doesn't effect these characters, their background story or their abilities whatsoever. So. You really can't spoil fun even if you tried.
Note from Birthday Wishes
Rosie - Quite happily contributing to the pile up despite her obvious lack of 'friendly' appendages.
Jack - Getting his face melted (Reasons you don't let the twins touch you)
Posie - Contemplating quantum physics behind her sister Rosie.
Note from AT THE READY
Floating around indiscriminately are the sisters Plague. These poor things have been the longest subjects of experimentation in the Everafter asylum and certainly look the part. I mean, at least Iggy got away with only having that one creepy ass popped eye.
Note from Impatience
Rosie and her twin sister have been in the custody of the Everafter asylum longer than any other patients ever committed, due to a particularly disastrous condition that refuses to improve. Rosie is also extremely restless, and dislikes sitting still for long periods of time. These two factors, as you might guess, make for a serious conflict of interest.
Tom Thumb
Journal/SNAFU
Long legs come in handy regarding magical boots. So does being flexible. Particularly when your shoes can't agree on what direction to take you.
tkay: When you're born as small as a thumb, being "tall," and that's in comparison to others, isn't something to happen often. "This youngest boy was very little. At his birth he was scarcely bigger than a man’s thumb, and he was called in consequence “Little Tom Thumb.”" They made it a point to say he is tiny compared to everyone else in the world.
End: ..you know what's really funny, knowing the exact angle and explanation that's going to be given later on in the story about Tom, and watching all the questioning and speculation going on.. Some people are probably going to say I deviated too much from the 'original' or took the idea out of context.. to those people, I say.. it's a comic.. relax. Seriously.
When drawing/writing Tom: Extremely conflicted, argues with his shoes constantly, but often loses the argument due to a weakening will. He once aspired to be someone his village could look up to. He was once certain he didn't belong in the asylum, but grows more confused each day.
Passive-aggressive, brooding and guilt-ridden most of the time but extremely protective of his friends, eager to get himself and whoever else he can out of the asylum.
DOXOPHILIA: I dont believe ever recalling any full-colored images of Tom Thumb in your gallery-- Are there any special colors for his shoes?
End: I always thought of them as scaly dark green, like dragon skin.
I would not want a pair of talking shoes. Because I know how they behave in the story, and wouldn't wish that fate on anyone. XD
A lot of folks have pointed out that 'Tom Thumb is supposed to be the size of a thumb but he's the tallest character in EA' as if I wasn't aware of that. Believe me, I've done my research, and it plays into the story. Those types of things won't go unexplained.
Notes from More Everafter filler
fobiddendeath: What is on his back and why? I found nothing in the Tom Thumb story about it. Curiosity has killed me.
End: A giant circular lock with a figures face and criss-crossed hands on it. It is what holds his straightjacket on, although it is magical in nature, no key will open it.
Glad you like the revamped boots, heh. I think they have some of the best dialogue. For. Shoes.
gothicmadness: The dragon boots are absolutely beautiful.
End: Finally someone who said dragon instead of crocodile boots.. You've made me happy. I think I may have to include that in the comic, the boots possessing a severe dislike of being called alligators or crocs, haha.. after all, what proud dragon would want to be compared to something a tenth of their size?
Note from Birthday Wishes
Looking annoyed at his shoe, which seems to be nibbling on a lock of his hair. In all fairness, he never feeds his shoes.
Notes from Tom Thumb
This is Tom Thumb. Upon his apprehension by the faculty of Everafter, he was subject to various experiments to determine the nature of his bizarre connection with his shoes. Tom’s claims that his boots berated him and told him to do things sparked interest in the higher tiers of the faculty. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to remove them from his feet, figure out where in the world Tom's real feet went, and never determined whether or not the boots were sentient. Which is exactly what the boots wanted.
Straightjacket. His arms are folded tightly against his back, crossing over one another.
Tom, much like a good deal of the other characters in Everafter, are based on amalgams of all the variations of their tales. Through different cultures, different variants of very similar fairytales exist. Tom is a combination of Tom Thumb, Hop o' My Thumb, Le Petit Poucet, among others. Mebbe you'd understand more with knowledge of those stories. :3 And for the record you aren't anywhere near the first person baffled by his height. Fairly regular question I get. But it's all explained in the story, so. Far be it for me to just flat out tell everyone. Buwahahah.
Alistu: I have one question that has occassionally nagged at me since first finding your pictures of Tom Thumb; how big is he?
End: 'Round six feet tall.
Humpty Dumpty
Journal/SNAFU
Flaming-Scorpion: would humpty dumpty like red to be crazy? XD -ish writing a story- ooo and a new category...
End: Well without crazy people Dumpty wouldn't have much of an asylum to run. But I don't think he wants them crazy to the point of endangering himself.
When drawing/writing Chairman Dumpty: Greedy, self-serving egg. Concerned only with the wealth coming in from the mainland kingdom that keeps his precious asylum running (and food on his plate, roughly seven times a day).
Note from Birthday Wishes
Sitting on top of Big Bad sporting the finest dentures any egg could hope to afford.
Iggy Piggie
Notes from More Everafter filler
Monocle..? Oh you mean his big eye..? That's not a monocle.. Haha. He just has one tiny dot eye and one really big crazy eye. Hee hee. But. I'm sure he'd appreciate being called 'dashing' regardless.
leahnari: Is the pig popping Capsules?
End: Yes indeed. Iggy likes his pills.
Pinocchio
Notes from Ahead of himself
You could TELL Pinocchio that pumpkins aren't the most engaging conversationalists, but it'd hardly matter. They score points with him simply for being attentive.

General
Everafter to me is already really close to my heart because it's my first serious undertaking at making a full length story. I've always created ideas from day one, and characters and settings, but never linked them all together in a full fledged graphic novel format. It is an experiment to reveal my style to me more and more, to see how I like to lay out scenes, how I like to have my characters speak, how to compose pages, etc..
And the entire theme of the story is something that's always intrigued me. Basically dealing with the side of people that they never show to the rest of the world. In everyone, in humanity itself, and questioning it's purpose and intent. The whole 'evil within man' is a tried and true plot of books from centuries ago to now, and movies alike, but, hey, they've all been taken, so this is just my spin on it.
When Disney made the 'Hercules' movie, they needed an art team to put together new designs for the old myths. Sure there are archetypes for how they are supposed to look, but the new artist is largely responsible for envisioning it in a way entirely their own. Which is what I am trying to do with Everafter. Little Red is about the only one who has an archetypal costume, to be honest. The others were basically left for me to dream up, which is why I consider them, as far as the designs are, to be original in my own creation. My very own 'versions', so to speak. But their stories have changed. A lot. A whoooole lot, you'll find, as you read further on. I don't think I left any of the original tales intact. Everafter does not work off the premise of what happened 'after' the tale, it's a complete retelling of what 'actually happened', mixed somewhere between the shiny kid-friendly versions, the somewhat more violent Grimm versions, and the horrifyingly morbid ORIGINAL versions told by word of mouth, peasant to peasant back in the old da-- very very very old days. (Most people seem to be under the misconception that the Grimms were the ones who made the stories, and made them gruesome beyond all belief. Not really all that correct. True, they did make them more violent here and there, but they also cleaned up a good deal of what the word-of-mouth stories contained, took out here and added in there, to make them more moralistic.) But yeah. Anyway. Again, as I said, I in no way, shape or form claim to have the rights to those characters original storylines.. hats off to our ancestors for those timeless tales that I just loved to hear before going to bed every night. But the cast of EA are still 'my guys' in a sense. Just as much as Gregory Maguire (the author of 'Wicked') would probably hold his version of the Wicked Witch of the West dear to his heart in a very defensive sense. Know what I mean? These guys take a lot of effort to create!
Q. How long is Everafter planned to be?
A. -thinks- Erm. Chapter 1 was about thirty pages in my head. There are roughly, at this time, about fifteen chapters planned out, but most likely that number'll change as scenes are cut/added. So you do the math. And round up as opposed to down, 'cause I like taking my time page to page, haha.. I'd be willing to say 500+ pages total, split like three graphic novels, more or less.
And these characters are not lame ass cookie cutter archetypes. They have something to them. Trust me. Red is not just a killing machine hellbent on revenge. Rosie and Posie aren't just mindless, silly cute evil vessels of destruction. They have stories of their own, and they will be told in the course of the comic. No one wants to just take over the world. No one wants to build an army of magic clones. No one that fights with one another is necessarily than destined to end up liking that person. I wouldn't have much of a story if this was true. These are real people. To me. I love these characters because they are deep, because I can see them in my minds eye, vividly. To any writer, artist.. I think their creations are real. Terry Pratchett says he only writes like 20% of his stories, the other 80% is the characters doing it themselves. That's being connected to your work, utterly and truly.
Everafter's prologue has a ton more blood and guts in it than the entire rest of the comic will. To the people who enjoyed the horrendous bloody massacre in the prologue, enjoy it while it lasts. This doesn't mean there won't be a tonnage of crazy fight sequences, and I still want to make them as exciting as possible. But not many more flying limbs and splatters, since the fight sequences will take place amongst a good deal of the 'main cast', and I can't kill too many off left and right.. at least not until later on.. Don't get attached to the faculty of the Everafter Asylum. If you're not a protagonist, chances are, your life expectancy is cut by about 75%. (Unless you're of the bad ass villain variety, and you'll know when they show up.)
The prologue was made before the entire EA story was really fully realized. It's outdated. But still a part of the overall plot, art aside. So yah. She looks much different in the prologue. That's to be expected. It was done quite some time ago. If I were to redo it (something I've been scheming to do for a while now), she would look like how she is being presented in these new pages. Well. Only a tad more irritable.
From the prologue to the new pages, what, about a year passed? You'll notice Red looking all squat in the prologue, and suddenly long and lanky in the new pages. No, she doesn't suffer from degenerative aging, it's just her character design underwent a big arse change since then. And actually, from these new pages.. you'll notice, after the next.. fifteen or twenty or so, there is another huge gap of time in which I took off to evaluate the style and where I wanted to take it. So it looks different. I genuinely like the art in the new pages, but.. not nearly as much as I do some of the later stuff.
EA's intended length is three volumes. And I don't think I ever read a story where it's amount of pages dictated whether or not it was memorable. I guess that's just a personal thing.
I got the idea for Everafter during a school project. We were supposed to create themed stamps. At first I decided I would make a trio of Fairytale Villain themed stamps. The original mugshots were of Big Bad Wolf, The Witch, and Rumplestiltskin I think. During the project I started doodling random, big eyed children in the margins; generics that were meant to look like fairytale children, the kind you hear about getting chased, lost, gobbled up by trolls all the time.. I later noticed I liked drawing these scary looking kids a lot more than the big bad villains. So I changed the project to the fairytale heroes. But of course, they needed a twist to be interesting. So I threw them into an asylum. Of course these versions (at the time just Little Red, Hansel and Gretel, and Goldilocks.) were the prototypes for the ones featured in the comic now. Since then, the whole scale of the story has escalated about a thousandfold, haha. I've always loved asylum sequences featured in movies/games, the setting is so unique, unsettling and eerie. Naturally the ENTIRE Everafter story does not take place within the asylum.. but nonetheless. A blast to create.
On page 18
All joking aside, those are indeed faeries. XD The shot was supposed to establish that they were flitting up out of the bushes and holding Red's attention. In the second panel you see the black figures popping their heads up, which was what rustled the faeries out of their little faerie.. dens, in the first place.
I grew up always thinking girls were underrepresented as protagonists. And when they were, they either had a guy to protect them, were the owner of some mystical pendant that'd save the world, were magic users, etc. Not nearly enough kicked serious ass with a melee weapon. And if they did, they were usually extremely buxom women in little to no clothing.
Everafter Artbookery. You guys polled for it after all! I'm shooting to fill about 90 pages, color. I have a lot to squeeze in. The artbook is going to be a full dossier of character profiles from the Everafter storyline, from Red to Tom to Gretel to Dr. Crooked. (Plus a heretofore unrevealed fairytale character.) It will include full page profiles of each inmate, as well as information on their history, their abilities and of course their designs. It'll likely include their original look, as well as the various costume changes and sketches they went through to get to what they appear like nowadays. There will be group shots and page-filling posters thrown in as well. I'm considering having a page or two in the back devoted to some fanart; I thought that would be a really nice way to end it. :3 I want to get creative with this thing. I may manage to lace in little bits of a prequel-ish storyline in the artbook. I like the idea of telling a story in an artbook. Oh yeah. You also might be interested to know I've finally scripted the actual Everafter comic plotline to the end of the first chapter. It's in the mix too. :u
